In one of the most beautiful architectural ensembles of St. Petersburg, created by the genius Carl Rossi especially for the Directorate of Imperial Theaters is located the Theatre Museum. The Museum's collection is based on the private collections of actors M. G. Savina and I. F. Gorbunov, playwright V. V. Protopov, and philanthropist and collector L. I. Zheverzheev (later the Museum's first deputy director for science). The Theatre Museum was opened to the public on May 16, 1921 and since then it has been one of the centers of theatrical life in St. Petersburg.
