Grand Hotel Europe, which celebrated its 150th anniversary, is the oldest luxury hotel in St. Petersburg, located in the heart of the city, on the corner of Nevsky Prospekt and Mikhailovskaya Street. Throughout its long history, the hotel has welcomed guests from all over the world. It was the site of the Emperor Nicholas II's reception of the Prince of Siam, the residence of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the concert of Sir Elton John, and the singing of Whitney Houston. The hotel's ornate neo-Baroque facade, designed by architect Ludwig Fontana, has been recognized as an architectural landmark. The famous stained-glass panel "Apollo on a Chariot", the stained-glass ceiling, and the elegant Art Nouveau wooden carvings adorn the Europa restaurant, which was designed by architect Karl Mackenzie and has been open since 1905.
In the year of its 150th anniversary, the legendary Grand Hotel Europe expanded its collection of themed suites and opened the historic Tchaikovsky Apartments. The room is dedicated to the great composer, whose visits are forever etched in the history of St. Petersburg's oldest hotel. Lithographs and archival photographs from the collection of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, works by contemporary artists, recreated suede slippers by Tchaikovsky, and tea with cognac and lemon, as the composer enjoyed, tell the story of Pyotr Ilyich and his work.
