Saint Petersburg is one of the candidates for the title of World Book Capital in 2020.

The Vice-governor of the city Alexander Govorunov stated this at a meeting with chief editors of literary magazines and journalists. The main theme of the meeting, which was dedicated to the preparation of St. Petersburg for the UNESCO World Book Capital 2020 contest, was the development of the culture of reading in Russia.

This contest is considered to be a great opportunity to promote Saint Petersburg in the world book market and to attract more tourists to the city as well. Furthermore, Saint Petersburg was awarded as the Most Reading Region of Russia with the framework of the Saint Petersburg International Cultural Forum.
